9-1-1 Scenario: Suicide

Listen to the audio clip and then test yourself by answering the following questions.

1:  Does the scene as described in the call sound secure and safe?
A: Yes
B: No

2:  How do you secure the scene?
A: Call your supervisor and let he/she know that you think the scene is secure.
B: Have law enforcement secure the scene prior to you entering.
C: The arriving EMTs have the jurisdiction to secure the scene.
D: Every scene is secure.

3:  The patient is not violent upon your arrival. Do you prepare for the possibility of the patient becoming combative and violent?

4:  The patient has taken pills to end her life. What priorities do you have in treating this patient?
A: Pay attention to the level of consciousness
B: Anticipate the sudden deterioration of the patient
C: Prepare to support their ABCs

5:  The patient has tried to commit suicide in the past as reported. Is this attempt a "real" attempt to end her life or just a call for help or attention?
A: Consider this attempt a call for attention.
B: Ignore the past and conclude that this is just an accidental ingestion.
C: The patient has stated that it is intentional and proceed as if this is a genuine attempt to end her life.
D: Suicide is not a real concept.
